THE ACE STUDY

Children, and adults, are affected in all areas of their life, including physical and mental health, relationships, and behaviours, by adverse experiences that they have had in their childhood. Identifying these experiences can help us in identifying the help we need to build resiliency and overcome the effects of these experiences.

One of the most important resources we now have to help children and adults who have had these experiences is the ACE questionaire/

What is the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study?

The study looks at ten adverse childhood experiences in three areas:

And from these, they observed a connected between the number of adverse experiences and adverse health, behaviors, and life experiences. Those who had 4 or more adverse experiences were significantly more at risk of these negative effects:

It is the largest investigation into the connection between childhood trauma and health and well-being issues suffered later in life. The study supports the need to address and prevent child abuse.
