Tulare County Activities This Holiday

The holidays are here! There are many things to do during the month of December. In a few weeks, kids will out of school for 2-3 week; a great opportunity to take advantage of the opportunities for family activities in Tulare County.

As a parent, you might be wondering, “How am I going to keep my kids occupied this break?”

Free Lunch During Holiday Breaks

Visalia Branch Library will be offering lunch for kids 1-18, Monday-Friday, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

There are places throughout Tulare County where there is still an opportunity to get a photo with Santa. In Dinuba, There will be an opportunity at the Alta Family Health Clinic Community Christmas Celebration, Friday, December 20 from 1:00-5:00p.m.

Porterville Train Museum will have a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus Saturday, December 8 at 1pm. Families are welcome to come to take photos and view the annual toy and train exhibit. See information here

The Porterville Barn Theatre is presenting Mary Poppins Jr.  through Sunday, December 16. See more information here.

Local Libraries

Winter break is a great time to discover and enjoy new books at your local library. It’s  lovely, warm place to spend a few hours or make a quick trip for new books. Have a book reading challenge to encourage your kids to read throughout the break!

Sequoia/ Kings Canyon National Parks

Go to the mountains! Right in our back yard are breathtaking giant trees and beautiful views…and a great open space for fun for the whole family. Go up after it snows to build a snowman and enjoy snow play. Don’t forget to wear gloves and warm clothing! Snow chains may be required on some days, so check out the Sequoias and Kings Canyon National Parks website for current conditions as well as events and other information!


Mystery of the Christmas Star and Christmas Traditions Around the World- Sam B. Pena Planterium- December 14, 6:00pm


This modern reference to the traditional Christmas story investigates possible dates for the birth of Christ and looks at recorded sightings of significant astronomical events during this important time in history. What signs in the sky might have been so intriguing as to cause three wise men to cross a desert in search of a newborn King? Mystery of the Christmas Star will answer all of these questions and more, while charming audiences of all ages. Outdoor Ice Skating- Visalia

From now until January 9, come out and enjoy the winter experience of ice skating. The Visalia Recreation Center has created their yearly outdoor ice skating rink. Cost: $10 and includes skate rentals. Admission is free on Thursday evening, December 14.






McDermont Field house- Lindsay

When it’s cold outside, the McDermont Fieldhouse is the perfect place for physical activity. There are basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields,interactive arcades, bounce houses, laser tag, fitness centers, rock wall, and more. Prices depend on activities. Porterville Historical Museum’s 34rd Annual Model Trains and Antique Toy Exhibit

Take your kids to see an array of model cars and antique toys (the kind your grandparents and great grandparents may have had) at the annual Porterville Historical Museum’s 33rd Annual Model Trains and Antique Toy Exhibit, going on through the end of the year. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for students, and 6 years and younger are free. Museum website

Zalud House

Another opportunity to step back into time! Built in 1891, the historic Zalud House is one of the few houses of that era that has not undergone remodeling. Inside the Zalud house are historic treasures from the region. The Zalud House is open Thursday thru Saturday from 10:00am-4:00pm.Regular admission is $1 for children and $3 for adults. Exeter’s Murals

Visit Exeter and see their well-known collection of murals. If you are going to the Sequoias, you can see these gems on your way to the mountains, but it is worth a trip in itself.

Create Art for Tulare County Farm Bureau Coloring Contest

Get artistic! The Tulare County Farm Bureau has announced “Tulare County Agriculture: Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead”” as the theme of its annual Student Calendar Art Contest. Students have until February 15 to complete and submit their artwork for the 2018-19 Calendar. The contest is annually sponsored by the Tulare County Farm Bureau and the Tulare County Office of Education.

“Look around your community, outside your classroom and as you travel around the county—agriculture is everywhere! Creative artwork should display images about agriculture, and reflect this year’s theme.”
